Intended Use
This
test card is designed for detecting the Rh blood grouping antigens C,c,
D, E, and e on human red blood cells. This product is not suitable for
blood source screening purposes.
Red blood cell antigens are classified into several blood group systems based on their properties and genetic relationships. Routine clinical testing typically includes the ABO and Rhsystems. The Rh system is an extremely complex blood grouping system, second in importance only to the ABO system. Within the Rh blood grouping system, the clinically significant Rh antigens are C, c, D, E, and e, with D being the most antigenic. Based on the presence or absence of the red blood cell D antigen, red blood cells are classified as Rh-positive or Rh-negative.
The clinical significance of the Rh systemis due to the fact that Rh-negative individuals who are exposed to the D antigen through blood transfusion or pregnancy may develop anti-D antibodies. In two out of three cases, these antibodies can destroy transfused Rh-positivered blood cells. During pregnancy, anti-D antibodies can affect an Rh-positivefetus, leading to hemolytic disease of the newborn.
